Dr. C. B. Akins, Sr., is a native of Bath Springs, TN and the son of Robert and Mary Lee Akins. He is one of six children born to this union. He is married to the former Roszalyn Mack and is the father of four children: one son, C.J., and three daughters Alicia, Neesha, and CeKesha.
Dr. Akins was raised in church by a praying mother. Having responded to the call to the ministry in 1977, he was licensed to preach, ordained in 1980, and became the pastor of Carneal Chapel MBC in Paducah, KY from 1980-1983. In 1983 he accepted the call to pastor First Baptist Bracktown, Lexington, KY and has remained a faithful servant of God in growing the church exponentially. He has partnered with God to grow the church from 65 members to over 1,000 active members. In June 2006, a new church complex with a sanctuary seating over 900, classroom space for over 400, a library/computer/tutorial center, a family life center, an after-school and summer camp program for 80 children.
In his educational pursuit, Dr. Akins graduated from Carrier Mills High School, Carrier Mills, IL in 1968;
from the Defense Language Institute, Czechoslovakian Dept., Monterey, CA, graduated 1971; University of Maryland, German Department, Rimbach, Germany, 1972; Draughon’s Business College, Paducah, KY, graduated 1976; Paducah Community College, Paducah, KY, graduated 1978; University of Kentucky, Lexington, KY, graduated 1993 BASW with honors; Lexington Theological Seminary, Lexington, KY, graduated 1996 Master of Divinity; Simmons Bible College. Louisville, KY, 1998, received Honorary Dr. Of Divinity; and the Lexington Theological Seminary, Lexington, KY, graduated 2001, Doctor of Ministry.
Dr. Akins served in the United States Air Force from 1969-1973 and was honorably discharged as a multi-lingual interpreter. From 1973 to 1980 he taught foreign languages in the Military Intelligence Division of the US Army Reserves. He has also studied eight languages including, Czechoslovakian, Russian, Chinese Mandarin, German, French, Greek, Hebrew, and Latin.
With his proven leadership ability and as an avid leader in the community and throughout the state, he has had the opportunity to serve on numerous boards that include the Commerce Lexington Board of Directors; Fayette Educational Foundation Board of Directors (Charter Member); One Community One Voice Board of Directors; African-American Education Coalition (Charter Member); University of Kentucky President’s Commission on Diversity (Charter Member), appointed by Governor Ernie Fletcher to serve as board member to the Kentucky Board of Education (2006-2011); Board of Trustees for Simmons College of Kentucky; Moderator, General Association of Baptist in Kentucky; Vice Chair Kentucky Board of Education (2009-2011); member Board of Trustees Midway College (2007-2011); and appointed by Governor Steve Brashear to serve on Board of Trustees for the University of Kentucky 2011-2017; Vice-Chair 2015-17
Dr. Akins has an affiliation with the Progressive National Baptist Convention, General Association of Baptists in KY, and the Kentucky Baptist Convention.
Dr. Akins is an in-demand preacher/speaker for revivals and conferences across the nation and is often called upon to support and to be a voice for disenfranchised cultures. In March of 2011, Dr. Akins and his wife, among many other clergy and political figures were blessed to be invited guest to President Barak Obama’s World Day of Prayer Breakfast held annually in Washington, DC.
Dr. Akins is the author of the Book “From Burden to Blessing”. His motto is: “Our Sole Business is Soul Business.”
